Universities of applied sciences must increasingly reinforce their role as intermediary organisations in the middle ground between basic research, applied research and development and innovation activities. Faculty-specific research and development programmes were designed to respond to those needs at the Turku University of Applied Sciences. The Programme for Expertise in Health Care and Medication focuses on the promotion of strategic and professional health care competence as well as citizens’ knowledge of health-related issues. The programme themes are health promotion, expertise in medication and patient safety.
The aim in health promotion is a vital human being who has the ability for self-renewal. Expertise in medication includes safe, efficient and adequate medication and the clients’ commitment to their own medication. Patient safety refers to safe and effective care embedded in different activities, structures and environments.
In this publication projects which were in progress or completed during the 2010–2011 period are described and categorised by the programme themes mentioned above. In addition to them, the publication describes projects which focus on promoting the structure and operational preconditions of health care services.
